“Am I making enough milk?”

This is one of the most common worries new mothers have—and often, the worry is greater than the problem.

In the first few days, colostrum is produced in small amounts, but it is usually exactly what your newborn needs. Frequent feeding or cluster feeding does not automatically mean you don’t have enough milk.

Look at your baby—not just how your breasts feel.
✨ Feeding frequently (often 8–12 times in 24 hours)
✨ Increasing wet diapers
✨ Effective swallowing and feeding
✨ Steady weight gain
✨ Baby appearing alert and satisfied after feeds

These are much more useful indicators of adequate milk intake. (ACOG⁠)

🚩 Seek help promptly if your baby has very few wet/soiled diapers, increasing jaundice, unusual sleepiness or lethargy, persistent difficulty feeding, or inadequate/continued weight loss.

And remember: needing support does not mean you have failed. If there is a genuine concern about milk transfer or supply, your pediatrician and lactation professional can assess the mother–baby feeding process and help.

Dr. Chinmay Umarji, Director of Fetal Medicine at Umarji Mother And Child Care Hospital, was proud to be part of this important gathering and the continuing journey of the Society of Fetal Medicine.

Under the visionary mentorship of Prof. Ashok Khurana, SFM has grown into a nationwide movement. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and Kibithu to Ghuar Mota, it has worked tirelessly to strengthen fetal imaging, improve the management of pregnancy complications and upskill clinicians through conferences, hands-on workshops, fellowships, webinars, publications, digital platforms and patient-awareness initiatives.

Prof. Khurana’s enduring contribution is also reflected in the diverse and cohesive team he has nurtured. Even as Mentor Emeritus, he remains personally involved—encouraging ideas, empowering team members and creating leaders united by a common purpose.

With expanding international collaborations and chapters, including the new SFM chapter in Indonesia, this vision is now building bridges beyond India.
